You sure you know who you are? (Think again)
There has been a recent craze over the Johari Window. People will send you a link through your MSN, asking you to fill up this 5 by 11 box with 55 adjectives. And you are suppose to select 5 words that best describes your friend. And the result will show you a square grid divided along two axes into four quadrants. One axis represents Known/Not Known (to self), and the other represents Known/Not Known (to others). You have the "arena" quadrant that represents qualities that are openly known. "Facade" that represents qualities that your friends do not know about. "Blind Spot" that represents qualities that you do not know about. "Unknown" which is self explanatory.
Not to discredit this heuristic tool but I seriously think it is way too simplistic. It is really crazy to have people label you by just these 55 qualities. Oh hi, my name is so and so and I am known by my friends as "positive" "cheerful" "giving" "relaxed" blah blah blah. If these traits are taken away, who are you then?
I am sure we are much more complicated right. The sudden craze of these "tell me what you think i am" goes to show how curious (read longing) we are to know what people think about us. But can the thirst of self knowledge be ever quenched? And the very interesting thing is this: Almost all my friends who did this has "self conscious" in the Facade i.e. qualities that your friends doesn't know you have. I don't know why but all these craze tells a story. People are shouting to be heard.. to be seen.. to be loved...
And the question remains for all to ponder: Do you really know yourself? When your personality traits, your titles, your accomplishments, your failures, your relationships with people are taken away from you, do you still know who you are?

The johari window is just one of the tools for people to achieve self-awareness. It is one of the many tools which allows people to have a peek at their ownselves and how people have perceive them. Most of the time, it serves as a general feedback.
These tools are only useful to generalize one's OUTWARD behaviour. It does not peek into one's inside secret world. Everyone has 2 worlds, like it or not. No tool will be able to peek into the secret world. However, the tools does allow oneself to see the certain asppects of the world that is visible to others and not to himself.
So whats this latest craze about? Its just another commercial gimmick which preys on human's nature yearning for recognition and assurance. Who is the biggest winner? Kevan of course!
The tools serves very generally. Just like as horoscopes and astrology readings. While horoscope and astrology attempts to classify one's FUTURE into only 12 categories, these assessment tools will definitely do a better job to classify a person's CURRENT into many different categories.
After all, its easier to read someone currently than to peek into the future.
its for people with low self esteem..like urs truly
Thanks man.. whoever u r. Tat's really insightful. :)
